In silent films… No one hears you scream!

In 1927, the ‘Jazz Singer’, staring Al Jolson, sent the cinema going public into a frenzy when it featured certain scenes with synchronised sound for the first time! It heralded the end of the silent movie era and the ‘Talkies’ were born.

One year later ‘TERROR’, a murder mystery set in an English country house, became the very first film to be totally ‘with sound’. In 1928, Australia saw over 185million film goers attend cinemas - a record that has never been surpassed

In early 1929, a group of wealthy businessmen and film studio executives formed the Australian Film Corporation to produce 'Showgirls Luck' - the first Australian talkie.

Stars from the American & British film industry were encouraged to make the journey down under and, together with existing Australian talent, set a date to commence filming. Having arrived by boat into Fremantle they assembled the Western Australia team in Perth to attend the inaugural script reading.

The ‘Silent Movie’ would be dead forever… And so would some of the stars!

You are invited to dress in the style of the period as you work together to solve the mystery.
