CircusWA: Eclipse

Presented by CircusWA

Eclipse is a contemporary circus production which maps a path through the clamour of environmental destruction and political extremism, into a future of light and hope.

Devised by WA's renowned theatre maker Sally Richardson in 2022 it was first explored by National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) students in 2023. Over the past three years CircusWA has forged connections and relationships with Melbourne-based NICA, and the South Australia Circus Centre to bring Eclipse to its full vision in 2026.

This premiere comes to the State Theatre Centre under the guidance of physical theatre Director Meredith Kitchen. The performers reflect the breadth of our humanity with a mix of ages - professional and youth circus artists. Through this production moves two young musicians from Perth and Nigeria singing original lyrics inside Louis Frere-Harvey's rich composition.

Eclipse is a modern reflection on a changing world order, examining the complexities of existence in the Anthropocene.

More than a performance, Eclipse is an invitation for us to reflect and imagine a future in which we can all thrive and grow.

A present future. Be curious. Come explore.

Social Emotional Wellbeing sits at the core of all we do and ensures our performers have the 'strength' to undertake complex productions such as Eclipse. Thanks to Healthway and the Kids Institute for aiding the development of our artists' wellbeing. The first development of Eclipse was commissioned by Australia's National Institute of Circus Arts. Creative Australia has supported two years of development and a national training tour. The State Government of WA, through the Department of CITS, has ensured consistent training for our Performance Academy. The Seed Fund is John Butler and Mumma Kin's foundation which has supported the inclusion of live musicians in this production.
